In the early 1980s, Dr. Peter Geistlich, a third-generation chemist and entrepreneur, came across the scientific work of the renowned oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Philip J. Boyne. For decades, Boyne had been researching how bone tissue could be regenerated, but the ideal substitute material was missing: one that was biological, pure, safe, and as close as possible in microstructure to natural bone.
Working closely with Harvard biomedical scientist Dr. Myron Spector, Peter Geistlich recognized the potential to create a completely new approach based on the company’s long-standing experience in bone processing.
