How Geistlich Revolutionized Regenerative Medicine with “Geistlich Bio-Oss®”

From the heart of Switzerland to California and back with an idea that would have a lasting impact on modern bone regeneration: The development of Geistlich Bio-Oss®, a natural bone substitute, marks one of the most significant milestones in Geistlich’s 175-year history.

In the early 1980s, Dr. Peter Geistlich, a third-generation chemist and entrepreneur, came across the scientific work of the renowned oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Philip J. Boyne. For decades, Boyne had been researching how bone tissue could be regenerated, but the ideal substitute material was missing: one that was biological, pure, safe, and as close as possible in microstructure to natural bone.

Working closely with Harvard biomedical scientist Dr. Myron Spector, Peter Geistlich recognized the potential to create a completely new approach based on the company’s long-standing experience in bone processing. Together with chemists, a phase of systematic research began - without specialized literature, without established models, relying solely on expertise, experiments, and a pioneering spirit.

Quality Through Time

The result is a patented manufacturing process protected by trade secrets: Geistlich Bio-Oss® is refined over five weeks (890 hours1), a deliberately lengthy process designed to fully preserve the natural bone structure.

The result is a bone substitute material that comes uniquely close to the natural microstructure of human bone and remains a global gold standard in regenerative medicine to this day. In 1985, Geistlich Bio-Oss® was successfully used clinically for the first time. What began as a visionary idea now supports millions of patients worldwide.
